On May 10th, 2018……
13 ISAAC 8th Graders and 4 ISAAC Teachers went on an Adventure. This is one of the student’s story.
Following four after school trainings and a lengthy gear check we loaded a bus and drove to the northwest corner of the state. After a two-hour bus ride we were dropped off in a dirt parking lot at the trailhead, with all the gear, clothing, and food we would need for the next three days.
From there we hiked two miles to our campsite. We set up our tents and cooked dinner. That evening several of us got to meet the porcupine that liked hanging out in the privy.
The next morning we woke up to a picture-perfect sunrise. We cooked some breakfast and packed up for a days hike. We hiked 3 miles up to the highest summit in CT, Bear Mountain, and when we reached the summit we could not get over the gorgeous vast views of Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. We ate some lunch and basked in the sun while celebrating our victory.
We then hiked back down and spent some time exploring Brassie Brook, while we filtered some drinking water. After some exploring, we hiked back to camp. That night we ate a yummy dinner and enjoyed two surprises. Once again several more of us got to meet our campsite Porcupine. After our long day of hiking 6 miles we all were excited to retire back to our cozy sleeping bags and tuck in for the night.
The next morning while slowly waking, we got to enjoy the pitter-patter of rain on our tents. Once the storm moved on, we broke down our campsite, packed our packs, and ate some breakfast. With everything put away and rain gear on, we started our hike out and the rain began again. We got to experience hiking in the rain, which as we found makes things slippery. After a short two mile hike we were back amongst civilization, sad to see our journey had ended.
The Denali Foundation is proud to support the ISAAC School Leadership students on their adventure with the donation of tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, sleeping pads, and camp stoves.
